pike fishing is not for more advanced anglers its for anyone in any canal the pike are everywere in huge numbers the only diffrence between fishing for pike and fishing for the other fish in the canal is the size of the tackle and bait you use if you have been trying for pike useing the small hooks and light line you use for the other fish your wasting your time pike are preditors they eat other fish even other pike so to catch them you need to use fish as bait and not just a little bit on a small hook but half a big fish sutch as mackerral or whole smaller fish sutch as sprats or sardine not cooked or smoked absolutly raw and fresh.and with bigger bait you need bigger hooks stronger line and biger reel and rod think more shark fishing and less roach fishing and in winter fishing for pike is a lot easyer than fishing for roach, perch, carp and the likes in fact pike are usually the only fish you can fish for in the winter and the colder the better.
none are as feirce as the pike but there are loads of other fish in our canals and not just the clean streaches but the inner citys aswell huge bream elusive grass carp thousands of hungery perch and millions of small roach even tench bigger common carp and on the very bottom monster eels are ever present ready to gobble up anything you send down there.
the easyest way to fight big pike is on eather the front or the back of your reel there will be a dial turning it will relise line from your reel depending on how hard your pulling the line pull quite hard so your rod is bending and set the dail so line is relised when the fish is pulling away to hard so when your reeling in a big pike if it makes a dash for it the pike will "run with your line" instead of getting off with the shear force if you turn the dail at its tightest so youre in complete control big pike will easely get free using there imence power.a 12ft rod with a test curve of 2 and a half pound will help a lot holding the rod vertically when into a big pike will take a lot of the sting out of the fight often you wont even need to backward wind or give them any line the rod will keep you winning the fight.
thats because in spring and summer the canal exploads into life the prey fish are everywere multipilying and sholeing in huge sholes the big pike hardly need to move they find a good hideing place and ambush the many fish who get to close the canal is teaming with many diffrent specieace of fish all now out in the open and easy to hunt your deadbait or lure is in compatition with thousands of shiney fish fat slow fish big meaty fish small jack pike thousands of eals to get your bait noticed takes lots of time experence patcence and local knowlage in winter however the canal is a frozen wasteland the only thing out in the open are the pike and tiny fry given a choice between chaising lightning fast smaller pike or tiny small fry thell always go for your lure or hook bait you will get the bites all you need to concentrate on is landing them pike have amazing eyesight and a unbelivabul sence of smell in the much clearer waters of winter both carry mutch further the pray fish retreat to the very bottom on lakes or rivers thats were you will get the bites by ledgering the bottom. on the canal it is different its only 6ft deep at its deepest and the pike are very poor at hunting on the bottom smaller fish will always have the advantage hiding in places the pike cant reach so they come up looking for other pike small jacks feeding off the fry who dont go to the bottom because of all the perch pike love to eat other pike and thats all there is in winter small fry small pike feeding on them bigger jacks feeding on them 5lb pluss pike feeding on the jacks and the doubles feeding on them so you cant go wrong in terms of getting bites the most inportant thing to remember is dont go deep dont ledger and make the most of it it only lasts until the second week of march.
put your credit card away pike fiashing is cheaper than any other kind of corse fishing any reel will do all your looking for is a big spool a sea fishing reel is perfect or if you dont have a reel with a big spool use any reel but use braided line you can fill a carp reel with 30lb breaking strain braided line but not with monoflet line it will just clock sping off again if you try to use it use what you can afford with regards to the rod ideally you wont a 12ft rod with a 2.5lb test curve but dont go out to buy one if the rod your useing is close enough if its smaller use your reel more the clutch or backward wind when the fish fights holdind your rod vertically.the line is inportant pike have amazing eyesight but never look at your line or hook when bait is involved they have a one track mind much like sharks introduce bait and thats all they can focus on so you dont need to worry about tine strenth or hook size they choose not to see it so never use line less than 15lb breaking strane i recomend 30lb and always you need a wire trace no matter how strong your line is the pikes teeth are so sharp they will bite through it always get your hooks from eather the pike and zander section of your tackle shop or the sea fishing section i use size 8 trebbles you need the hook to be very big and barbed.obviosly with sutch big line bait and hooks you need a big float i recomend eather a medium or large ball float there very cheap around 99p for two and the most affective otherwise big pike floats there a lot more complicated with swivels and stop knots and no instructions were as with a ball float you just tie it to your line with one knot through one eye simple tie the wire trace 3ft underneath that then 6ft under the ball float tie a weight eather a plumit weight or a bullet weight to hold it all in place takes seconds and is just as effective as any complicated rig.
firstly allways have a set of forcepts handy or long nosed pliers never! try to unhook a pike with your fingers not even the very small ones not if you wont to keep your fingers.this is the only safe way to unhook a pike for both you and the fish.1 lay the pike flat on a unhooking mat or a soft area of grass clear of debris.2 press your hand at the top of the body just below the head then slide your fingers under the gill gentelly slide your hand up towards the jawbone just under the mouth and grip tightley your now in full control of the fish.3 pull the mouth open using your grip on the jawbone so you can see just were the hook is take the forcepts and push the hook backwards with a gentil twist.4 throw the hook clear of the fish.5 take a photo and feel very pleased with yourself!
in the canals avoid big heavy metal lures sutch as spinners and spoons apart from them not being very effective they are really bad for snagging the lures that work the best are crankbaits and plugs but the best lure by far are the soft jelly lures one about the size of a goldfish will keep you catching all day or a jelly in the shape of a very small pike no longer than a pencil as always with pike they wont work to well in summer but will be devastatingly effective in the winter you can also get jelly worms witch are mutch bigger than a worm and very brightly colored with glitter in them these are so effective eather with a bit of weight to make them swim about a foot down or with no weight just a hook as a surface lure in febuary the pike work together to shole up the fry to the surface one of these surface lures going across were the pike are jumping for the fry will get a take every time.but the number one lure is a real fish sutch as a roach perch sprat or rud dead with a big jay hook through the skull of the fish on a wire trace it sounds so simple it shouldent work but it not only works in winter but summer as well not just in uk canals but any water that has pike bass zander or big perch in them.
